We went shopping yesterday with my sensei and she showed us the place to buy cheap snacks. My kids spotted these Kirby Sodas and asked what they were. She told us jelly soda. Well, of course we had to try that!! They were thick like jelly and had hard cubes of jelly in it. It was sooo weird!! The only bummer was that it must have had artificial sweetener in it. My kids and I are sensitive to that stuff and we don't have to have much before we feel it. But, we saved them for husband and when he got home he enjoyed the uniqueness as well!
The other day we went to the school to register the kids. The school is sooo big!! G will be in grade 2 here and there are 5 classes of 27 kids! We got to go on a tour of the school. It's very old. I'm pretty sure it only has squattie potties not western toilets so that should be interesting for the kids. G has a friend from New Zealand in her grade already and he was so excited to see us and showed us around. When we went to see the sixth grade, they were having English class and the kids pounded their desks and made Little Buddy sit and participate with them. It was really cool. They were so welcoming. Little Buddy was petrified, but was brave and did great. He answered a question correctly, and the teacher had him help read questions as well. The principal said he'd like us to help teach English as well. I wanted to take pictures, but didn't think I'd be allowed.
One funny thing is that we thought Little Buddy would be more average height here but when we went to his class he still seemed to be on the short side!
There was so much in the school that was unusual to us. The kids wear a special gym uniform and gym shoes on the day they have PE. They take off their outside shoes and change into school shoes when they get to school. The school just felt so different from what we are used to. I'm sure the kids will get the hang of it quickly though. They will start September 2nd. Both kids teachers were really nice. They also have Japanese as a second language classes at the school.
