Osaka part two

Our second day in Osaka we went to a little coffee shop for breakfast that was 0.1 miles from our hotel.  It ended up being my favorite meal of the trip!  I don't know what magic the owner put in the breakfast but it was delicious.  I had bacon and egg on toast.  It sounds so simple but the flavors were so good I thought I tasted horseradish and husband said dijon.  Plus the coffee was superb.  It was so good that we ended up going back the next morning.
On our way back from breakfast we saw a giant purple santa clause, so we went and checked it out.  It was some sort of Christmas Chapel.?!

Then we used the metro system to make our way to the HEP 5 building for our first destination of the day.  We had reservations at the Gudetama cafe!  This flower thing was in one of the stations on our way.  A mall pops up near every train station it seems and photo ops are plentiful.

This is in the HEP 5 building on our way to the Gudetama cafe!

I won't inundate you with too many pictures since I'm sure you saw them on Facebook.  But the Kawaii factor did not disappoint. So cute!!

White curry with cute Gudetama shaped rice.

After this we rode on a ferris wheel that started at a cut out inside the building.  It gave us great views of the city.  So high up!

Then we went to Osaka Castle.  Husband has the picture of the castle on his phone, so you'll have to take my word for it that it was a castle.  We were impressed with the size.  It had 2.5 moats!!  It was so well protected.  I would have felt very safe to live there.

You could go up to the top and look at the views of Osaka.  And then there was a museum inside.  It was so blistery hot that we were pretty much melting down.  Plus, we had walked 8 miles the day before and ended up doing another 8 on this day.
G was so tired that we stopped at combini to get onigiri on our way to the hotel and we just stayed in for the night.  The boys rallied and went back out to get food at Dotonbori.  They had yakitori (meat on sticks).

The next day we decided to do Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan.  Can you believe that they have 2 whale sharks in the aquarium!?!?!  So cool.  It was a neat aquarium.  You started at the top and wound your way down getting lower and lower on the tanks as you went.  There were dolphins and seals and penguins as well as all kind of fish.  This was a nice activity for a day even hotter than the day before.

The pictures really don't do justice on the whale shark.  Sorry.

And there was a big shark for me to get my picture taken with!

Afterward we snagged some lunch before we went back to our home in Suzuka.  The kids had been begging to have a tapioca drink and we finally relented.  We ate at Wendy's in a food court.  I had an umami chicken sandwich and everyone else had burgers.  It was good.  Husband liked it better then Wendy's at home.

This is the aquarium and our last adventure for the trip in Osaka.  There is so much more to see of this city and we are excited to come back.

Bon Odori

There is so much to catch up on with blogging!  I didn't bring my computer with us on vacation to Tokyo, so I am a tad behind.  Before we left, Husband's co-worker invited us for a BBQ during the day and then we'd go together to Bon Odori at the kid's school.  Obon (or Bon) is a festival to remember your ancestors.  Often people have family reunions and clean the graves of loved ones. They cooked us sooo much food and so much of it was unusual to me and so fun!  He cooked fish on a grill.  He cooked it whole with salt on the outside.  It was delicious!!  He also cooked beef tongue, which was good.  And, chicken skewers (some of which were chicken cartilage).  It was all yummy, although I was so stuffed and couldn't eat much.  It was also hard to eat because it was very hot outside. The family has three kids and they played in a little baby pool that barely fit all 5 of them standing up.  But they had a blast anyway....

jelly soda

We went shopping yesterday with my sensei and she showed us the place to buy cheap snacks.  My kids spotted these Kirby Sodas and asked what they were.  She told us jelly soda.  Well, of course we had to try that!!  They were thick like jelly and had hard cubes of jelly in it.  It was sooo weird!!  The only bummer was that it must have had artificial sweetener in it.  My kids and I are sensitive to that stuff and we don't have to have much before we feel it.  But, we saved them for husband and when he got home he enjoyed the uniqueness as well! The other day we went to the school to register the kids.  The school is sooo big!!  G will be in grade 2 here and there are 5 classes of 27 kids!  We got to go on a tour of the school.  It's very old.  I'm pretty sure it only has squattie potties not western toilets so that should be interesting for the kids.  G has a friend from New Zealand in her grade alread...

swimming

The kids and I ventured out to the swimming pool last week.  It's about a half mile walk from our house.  I knew there wouldn't be older kids there since it was during school hours, but we were the absolutely only people there.  It was a little awkward, but the guards didn't seem to mind and tried to speak with us in broken English/Japanese.  It was interesting trying to figure out the rules.  You buy a ticket from a ticket machine.  Then take your shoes off in the genkan (all houses have these areas- it's where you leave your shoes), put your shoes in a bag provided, and then hand your ticket to the pool worker.  She gives you a locker key and you are free to go swim for 2 hours!  The pool was really nice and had a fast racing slide in the kiddie area.  We swam the entire time and had a blast.  We invented a new game that we call crab tag.  The kiddie pool is really big and shallow, so you can only use your arms to propel you in...
