the rest of Tokyo trip all crammed into one post

I realize it's been a very long time since we went to Tokyo, but I wanted to make sure we got the rest posted about.

B has wanted a hedgehog for quite a few years.  So badly that when he would think about hedgehogs he would start crying! So when we learned there was a hedgehog cafe in Tokyo we knew it was something we totally had to do!  Little Buddy was in heaven.

They were really cute and it was a highlight of the trip for B.

Actually we all enjoyed it.  How could you not love those sniffly little rolly cutie pies.

Hedgehogs are quite popular as pets here and we can see them in the pet stores, but you don't get to hold them like you did at the cafe.  There are also cute hedgehog things to buy everywhere.  B got a hedgehog pencil case for school.

The crazy thing is that my favorite animal (other than sharks) are otters, and this cafe also had otters!!

We could feed them!  They'd grab a piece of food from your hand through a little hole in the glass.  So cute!!

If you research Harajuku on things to do these cotton candies always pop up!  Our Japanese tutor in America showed the kids a picture of her with one and of course the kids thought it was awesome!

It was rainy when we got it and the kids were quite a sticky mess by the end.  Haha!

This is at a temple we visited.  There were a bunch of little shops all around and we had fun looking at all of the souvenirs.  I got some little pieces of fabric that are pretty cool.  I wish I could have brought my sewing machine to Japan, but I was told even with a transformer the electricity difference would ruin my machine.  We did look for a used one the other day, but haven't had any luck yet.

That gold thing is the Asahi brewery.  It's supposed to be a torch?  You can also see the Tokyo Skytree.

The fish market itself has moved to a new location, but we decided to go to the old location to shop at the food stalls.  This is a very famous tamagoyaki stand.  Tamagoyaki is one of G's favorite foods, so of course she had to get one!  Tamagoyaki is a rolled sweet egg omelet that is often served room temperature.

We all tried these little octopus on a stick.  Can't say I loved them, but they weren't yucky.  We also ate sea urchin and had sushi.  Yum!

This statue was outside of a buddhist temple and when we went in they were having a service so we sat and watched for a while.  There was a lot of chanting, and I thought it was interesting to hear.

How cool are these little stone statues with red hats and shawls and pinwheels?  If I am not mistaken, they represent prayers for healthy children/pregnancy.

Oh my gosh.  Karaoke was hilarious.  We would totally do that again.

fun statues

If you are a fan of Pokemon then you recognize that Palette Town is where Ash is from (His name is Satoshi in Japan).  The kids enjoy that the places Ash goes in the show are really places here.

Bon Odori

There is so much to catch up on with blogging!  I didn't bring my computer with us on vacation to Tokyo, so I am a tad behind.  Before we left, Husband's co-worker invited us for a BBQ during the day and then we'd go together to Bon Odori at the kid's school.  Obon (or Bon) is a festival to remember your ancestors.  Often people have family reunions and clean the graves of loved ones. They cooked us sooo much food and so much of it was unusual to me and so fun!  He cooked fish on a grill.  He cooked it whole with salt on the outside.  It was delicious!!  He also cooked beef tongue, which was good.  And, chicken skewers (some of which were chicken cartilage).  It was all yummy, although I was so stuffed and couldn't eat much.  It was also hard to eat because it was very hot outside. The family has three kids and they played in a little baby pool that barely fit all 5 of them standing up.  But they had a blast anyway....

jelly soda

We went shopping yesterday with my sensei and she showed us the place to buy cheap snacks.  My kids spotted these Kirby Sodas and asked what they were.  She told us jelly soda.  Well, of course we had to try that!!  They were thick like jelly and had hard cubes of jelly in it.  It was sooo weird!!  The only bummer was that it must have had artificial sweetener in it.  My kids and I are sensitive to that stuff and we don't have to have much before we feel it.  But, we saved them for husband and when he got home he enjoyed the uniqueness as well! The other day we went to the school to register the kids.  The school is sooo big!!  G will be in grade 2 here and there are 5 classes of 27 kids!  We got to go on a tour of the school.  It's very old.  I'm pretty sure it only has squattie potties not western toilets so that should be interesting for the kids.  G has a friend from New Zealand in her grade alread...

swimming

The kids and I ventured out to the swimming pool last week.  It's about a half mile walk from our house.  I knew there wouldn't be older kids there since it was during school hours, but we were the absolutely only people there.  It was a little awkward, but the guards didn't seem to mind and tried to speak with us in broken English/Japanese.  It was interesting trying to figure out the rules.  You buy a ticket from a ticket machine.  Then take your shoes off in the genkan (all houses have these areas- it's where you leave your shoes), put your shoes in a bag provided, and then hand your ticket to the pool worker.  She gives you a locker key and you are free to go swim for 2 hours!  The pool was really nice and had a fast racing slide in the kiddie area.  We swam the entire time and had a blast.  We invented a new game that we call crab tag.  The kiddie pool is really big and shallow, so you can only use your arms to propel you in...
